“My eyes will watch over them”

How many times have we feared that our rebellion had cost us too much, that there was no way we could ever be right with God again?
In Jeremiah chapter 24, we see a conversation between the prophet Jeremiah and the Lord.
The Lord shows him a basket full of “very good figs” and a basket full of “bad figs”. It says the bad ones were so bad that they could not be eaten.
The Lord proceeds to tell Jeremiah, that even though they are bad, they are not too bad for him.
He makes the most beautiful declaration to Jeremiah, promising that He himself will watch over those “bad figs” because he regards them as “good”.
Why?
He regards them as good even though they are bad simply because He loves them.
That love compels Him to believe that they are worthy of being protected, pursued, and nurtured back into a right relationship with Him.
The Lord promises hope for those bad figs in verse 6 that when he says “my eyes will watch over them for their good and bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down…”
And in verse 7 He displays an extraordinary amount of love for them when He declares, “I will give them a heart to know me…”
How beautiful is that?
In the midst of our rebellion, the Lord still loves, protects and pursues us! He always has a plan to bring us back into His loving arms.
