The biggest block between God and us is often “Unforgiveness”.
Not that God has not forgiven our sins, because He has.
The problem is that we cannot forgive others for their trespasses against us.
When teaching the disciples how to pray, Jesus said to pray like this, “…And forgive us our debts AS we also forgive our debtors.”
We often forget that the word 'AS' can be translated as 'simultaneously'. Meaning “at the same time as” or “while I am”.
So it makes me think of it like this: “Father, while I am forgiving the debts of my debtors, I am going to trust that you are forgiving me of the debt I owe you.”
What is a debtor? It's someone who took something from us and owes us reimbursement.
It could be money that they owe, but what if it is an apology?
Then, for argument's sake, let’s say they apologize.
What do we do when the apology cannot make us whole again?
What if the apology cannot restore the innocence they stole, the time they wasted, the memories they traumatized, or the hearts they ripped to shreds?
My friend, that is when we must lean on the Lord to help us forgive that which was stolen and can never be returned.
In forgiving, we learn to lay down the desire for those things to be returned to us.
That, in turn, gives us the freedom to start looking forward to a better day.
A brighter day that can be filled with peace instead of anger, joy instead of bitterness, and hope instead of regret.
On that day, we can enjoy authentic and lasting peace because while we were letting go of what they owed us, God was letting go of what we owed him.
Every sin that we have ever committed against our heavenly Father gets forgiven when we forgive others their sins against us.
